Superstar nurses from Weston race to raise money for local hospice

SUPERSTAR nurses from Weston General Hospital are taking part in a charity fundraiser to raise money for a local hospice.

The team of active nurses who work in different areas of the hospital are readying themselves to run in Weston Hospicecare’s first Bubble Rush event in Apex Park on Saturday 5th August, 2017.

The hospice, which costs £3.5 million a year to run, provides end of life care to its patients free of charge and its ability to operate relies on support from the local community.

The nurses from Weston General Hospital have bandied together to run this year, but all have very different personal reasons for supporting the hospice.

Jayne Biddiscombe, complex needs sister at the Trust, says: “A few years ago I lost my wonderful uncle Paul to bowel cancer – he was just 57 when he died.

“He and his partner Anna received such compassionate and dignified care and support from staff in a wonderful hospice in Cornwall so I wanted to raise some money for my own local hospice to help them continue to deliver the same care for others.

“Competing in this year’s Bubble Rush is my way of showing support to the hospice and remembering my uncle.”

Emma Newbold, lead nurse, palliative care, adds: “Weston Hospicecare do a fantastic job. Two years ago the hospice looked after my mother-in-law and took incredible care of her. I want to thank them by raising money through the Bubble Rush.”

Jan Dallard, Clinical Nurse Specialist in Palliative Care at the hospital, says: “Weston Hospicecare are an invaluable part of the local community so I’m looking forward to taking part in the Bubble Rush with the rest of my colleagues to raise money for this fantastic organisation that do so much for others.”

The nurses will be competing in the family friendly run along with their friends, relatives and other members of staff from the hospital, such as Jodie Fry, executive assistant at the Trust, who adds:

“I’ve just started running and really wanted to do something to raise money for a local cause. We’ve all signed up together and we’re really looking forward to the Bubble Rush where we can have fun while also supporting the hospice."

The Bubble Rush event is a 5k course, open to all ages, which sees participants running their way through a sea of colourful foam and special ‘bubble stations’ placed along the route.
