Children's Physiotherapy Service

We are a team of Physiotherapists covering North Somerset, based at Drove Road Child Development Centre (CDC) in W-S-M. We also work from The Barn in Clevedon.

We are part of the community team supporting children and their families where the child has a physical difficulty during their development.

There are 2.4 whole time equivalent qualified staff who are all Chartered Physiotherapists.

We see children with a variety of conditions such as developmental delay, neurological conditions Musculo dystrophy, Musculoskeletal conditions specific to childhood.

We are a community, not acute, based service and don't see respiratory conditions, injuries or musculoskeletal conditions not specific to children.

Referral criteria

Assessment may take place uni or multi-professionally. Advice or treatment will then be decided on. A Physical Management Plan (PMP) including exercises may be devised as part of the treatment package. Carers at pre- school, school and/or respite may be trained to carry out the PMP.

Sessions may take place in the CDC, Pre school, school, respite setting or home when there is a clinical reason to do so.

The Physiotherapists carry out joint clinics with orthotists and are part of the assessing and ordering of postural equipment.

We take part in CDC meetings, multi agency meetings and school reviews to try to co-ordinate the approach for the child and family where appropriate.

The child will be discharged when the child is better, when a treatment package is established or when Physiotherapy is no longer felt to be beneficial.
