Weston General Hospital’s Oncology Treatment Goes Wireless

Home

The Unit is the first area within Weston General Hospital to benefit from the newly-installed wireless network, which will eventually allow bedside access to computers for clinical staff throughout the hospital.

Being able to enter data at the bedside will reduce the need for duplicate paperwork and the risk of error – thereby increasing patient safety and staff productivity.

Using new 'Workstations On Wheels' or WOWs, members of staff on the Oncology Day Unit are able to access a new Chemotherapy E-Prescribing System - called MOSAIQ and supplied by Elekta - through the wireless network and while at the patient's side.

Dr Serena Hilman, Consultant Clinical Oncologist and Research and Development Director at Weston General Hospital, said: "This is an exciting development for the Trust and shows our continued commitment to providing the highest levels of patient care.

"We are really pleased to have the opportunity to use wireless technology with our electronic chemotherapy prescribing system. This will improve patient safety and streamline the patient experience through a more co-ordinated approach.

"The members of the Oncology Day Unit team, with the help of our project manager Shane Nation, have been very enthusiastic about this project. We plan to continue the hard work and obtain patient feedback on it as it is rolled out."

Peter Harding was one of the first of Weston's patients to benefit from the mobile system in the Hospital's Oncology Unit.

Mr Harding, who has a professional background in IT, said: "We are moving increasingly in to a world of tablet PCs and smartphones using wireless technology, so it is good to see an NHS hospital joining the 'wireless club' and receiving all the benefits of wi-fi and a paperless IT system.

"I'm very impressed, and in particular with the chemotherapy treatment I've been given."
