The ‘Diamond Jubilee Scanner Appeal’ has been launched to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the League of Friends, an independent charity that raises funds for projects around the hospital.
Digital scanning is used to diagnose a wide range of health conditions. Weston General Hospital carries out over 70,000 scans every year, predominantly on the elderly – and demand is expected to increase as the population in Weston and North Somerset grows and continues to age.
The Trust and the League of Friends, who are working jointly on the appeal, believe new digital scanning equipment will provide a range of benefits to patients and dramatically cut down on waiting times and travel.
June Stephen, Chairman of League of Friends, said: “This appeal is for the people of Weston and the surrounding areas. New digital scanning equipment will mean people can access treatment locally, rather than needing to travel to Bristol or Taunton. That’s hugely beneficial, especially for older people who might find travelling to be more difficult.”
The charity has supported the hospital since the 1950s and during this time has raised more than £5 million to support the Trust.
June adds: “Throughout our history the League of Friends has always been committed to raising funds to support Weston General Hospital, whether that’s to buy medical equipment or to upgrade facilities. Everything we do benefits people who live locally.
“Public support is essential to making our Diamond Jubilee Scanner Appeal a success. With their help, we can hit our target and ensure the hospital remains at the forefront of patient care for the people of Weston and North Somerset.”
Jane Baker, Lead Radiographer at Weston Area Health NHS Trust, said: "The appeal is going to really benefit the 70,000 patients we see each year.
"New digital scanning equipment will enable us to offer a walk in service with no appointment necessary. Patients of all ages will benefit as they would be able to come for their X-ray examinations whenever it is convenient for them.
"Since the equipment produces superior images, it will also enable us to diagnose conditions more quickly, cut waiting times and improve our overall service, hopefully leading to better health outcomes for our patients."
The fundraising launch also saw some notable attendees, including John Penrose MP, and Councillor Raymond Armstrong, the Mayor of Weston-super-Mare, who all came along to show support for the appeal.
Trust Chief Executive, James Rimmer, added: “The launch of the Diamond Jubilee Scanner Appeal exemplifies the tireless dedication of the League of Friends’ volunteers over the last 60 years to raising donations to support our hospital.
“We’re proud to be working in partnership with the League of Friends on this appeal. Having new digital scanning equipment will ensure we can meet future growing demand and increase our diagnostic capacity across the Trust.”
If you should wish to support the appeal, please enclose a donation marked scanner appeal and send to League of Friends at Weston General Hospital. You can also donate directly, via the League of Friends shop which is located inside the hospital.
