The money will provide new headphones so that all patients staying at the hospital can tune into Sunshine Radio – the hospital’s radio station that is staffed entirely by volunteers.
Ian Porter, Master of the Lodge, said: “One of our long-time members Mike Braden was a patient at Weston General Hospital and sadly passed away earlier this year.
“When Mike was in the hospital he experienced difficulties with his sight and became wholly dependent on the spoken word to receive any news – he became particularly fond of Sunshine Radio, the hospital’s radio network.
“Mike was well respected and highly thought of, and when he passed we wanted to do something worthwhile to mark his memory.
“It was brought to our attention that funds were required to provide new headphones so that more patients could tune in and listen to Sunshine Radio. We thought it would be a great gesture to supply headphones to the hospital in memory of Mike and his huge contribution to our organisation.”
The funds for the new headphones were raised entirely from the organisation’s own membership, with no outside help or donations sought.
Mr Porter adds: “All donations come from our member’s own pockets. We are keen to help out the local community we are part of – in particular, hospital patients – and with this project meaning so much to so many, it was fully supported by our membership.
“We are delighted to be able to provide a pair of headphones for each patient so that they can fully participate in Sunshine Radio.”
Speaking on the donation, Radio Sunshine presenter, Marcus Tripp, said: “We're very sad to learn of the passing of Mike, but pleased to hear that we were able to make his time in hospital more comfortable with our shows.
"The donation of headphones is both generous and thoughtful."
Trust Chief Executive, James Rimmer, added: “The donation by Birnbeck Masonic Lodge is greatly appreciated.
“When people spend time in the hospital, listening to music can be very comforting. This donation will allow us to supply headphones for all patients which we hope will help them to enjoy an even better hospital experience.”
