Students from schools across the district who are considering a future in healthcare were given hands-on insight into potential careers at Weston Area Health NHS Trust during a week-long programme of work experience activities for students interested in the health industry.
Those interested in future surgical career possibilities were invited to try using theatre equipment and received a glimpse into life working in an operating theatre. The students had a chance to use surgical equipment and dress in surgical gowns to ensure they experienced strict hygiene standards.
Jayne Fitzgerald, Theatre Manager at the Trust, said: “It’s brilliant to see so many students from the area showing an interest in medicine.
“The students really enjoyed hearing from our healthcare professionals and getting to try out some of our surgical equipment. If it convinces some of them to consider opting for a career in medicine then that would be fantastic.”
The trust’s work experience programme is not just for would-be doctors, and it also offered students interested in working in the NHS the opportunity to experience different career options, including within areas such as physio, speech and language, dietetics and infection control.
Sheridan Flavin, Director of Human Resources at the trust, said: “As the largest local employer in Weston we are keen to highlight to young people in the area that there are diverse career opportunities available in the hospital.
“We hope that through work experience programmes like ours we can inspire the next generation to consider a career in healthcare – hopefully at Weston General Hospital.”
