The team at Ashcombe Birth Centre, which is part of Weston Area Health NHS Trust, will be hosting the event on Saturday 3rd September, from 10-3pm, at Oliver’s café in Clarence Park.
The day will provide an opportunity for people planning to start a family to discuss the birthing options available to them, including giving birth at home, at a birth centre or at a hospital.
Belinda Cox, Matron of Ashcombe Birth Centre, said: “Being pregnant brings with it lots of excitement, but also a lot of questions. This free event is for pregnant women, people planning babies, prospective grandparents – anyone with an interest”.
The event will provide information and advice, as well as the opportunity to ask experts any questions they may have about pregnancy.
Belinda continues: “Giving birth is generally very safe wherever you choose to have your baby. The choice you have about where to have your baby will depend on your needs and, to some extent, on where you live.
“During our event, the team will be able to discuss the options that are available to you in your area, and what might work best for you.
“We also hope to educate people on the benefits of giving birth in a local facility, such as a freestanding unit under the care of a midwife, which is often the safest option for the majority of pregnant women.”
For women with straightforward pregnancies, it is advised (by NICE guidance) that planning to give birth in a midwifery‑led unit, such as Ashcombe Birth Centre, is the safest option.
Belinda adds; “There is a lot of misinformation about the safety of different birthing environments. We want to remind expectant mums that the options available to them locally are safe, accessible and convenient.”
