The Trust which runs Weston General Hospital has appointed Dr Peter Collins as its new Medical Director.
Dr Collins begins his role immediately, overseeing the management of the Trust’s consultant body as well as doctors in training.
Peter brings a wealth of clinical experience from his previous position as a consultant hepatologist where he had regional and national roles in clinical research and liver cancer services. He was also a training programme director for core medical training and a Royal College of Physicians tutor.
He joins Weston from his most recent role as Clinical Chair for University Hospitals Bristol NHS Foundation Trust (UHB) where he took a lead role in redesigning the hospital’s model of medical care to align more closely with its patient’s needs.
Speaking about his appointment and why he joined the Trust, Peter said: “I’m really happy to be joining the team. Weston is a very special place to work; both rewarding and challenging with exceptional staff that are passionate about delivering good quality, safe patient care.
“I very much look forward to working closely with the team at Weston to continue our quality improvement work and improve the experiences of all those who use our services.”
Dr Collins is also committed to delivering a clear plan for what future services at Weston Area Health NHS Trust will look like. He explains:
“It’s important that we’re able to outline what a future health model will look like in Weston, working together with our local Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) and colleagues in North Somerset.
“Another key area will be forging closer links and working partnerships with our health and social care partners, including colleagues across the Bristol and North Somerset regions, so that we’re able to continue delivering good quality, effective care to our patients, now and in future.”
Welcoming him to the Trust, James Rimmer, Chief Executive Weston Area Health NHS Trust said: “I’m delighted that Dr Collins has joined us as our new Medical Director. His strong medical background and wealth of experience will be of great benefit to us.
“Peter is a very experienced clinical leader who knows the Trust well and has a strong understanding of the local health community and the partners we work with. I have full confidence that his rigorous approach will improve the quality of care that we deliver.
“I congratulate Peter on his appointment. We are very much looking forward to working with him.”
