Will Burns, from Weston Super-Mare, competes in the British Touring Car Championship (BTCC), a touring car racing series held each year in the United Kingdom.
Today (25 July 2017), Burns took a pit stop at Weston General Hospital to meet with the team behind the appeal, including staff from the Trust’s radiology department and it’s League of Friends, where he offered words of encouragement and added his own support to the fundraising drive.
In an added boost to the campaign, Burns will also feature the Scanner Appeal’s ‘WES logo’ on his racing jacket for future BTCC events.
Burns, who is set to race at Snetterton in Norfolk later this week, commented: "Being a local lad I fully understand the importance of this hospital to the local community. Meeting staff and patients today has also really driven home the passion for the fundraising appeal.
“I’m really happy to add my support to the Scanner Appeal as it’s a great cause. I encourage everyone to get involved and donate where they can – new x-ray equipment will make a huge difference to the lives of people living in Weston and the surrounding areas.”
June Stephen, Chairman of the League of Friends, said: “It’s absolutely fantastic to have the support of one of the country’s top racing driver’s – and a local boy – who completely appreciates the importance of this fundraising appeal and it’s potential to change lives.”
Grahame Paine, Chair of Weston Area Health NHS Trust, added: “We’re delighted to spotlight the Scanner Appeal through this up and coming racing talent - it will help to raise the profile of this important appeal and encourage further public support which will drive us toward the £400,000 we need for vital scanning equipment.”
