Weston’s new Birthing Pool used by Mum for First Time

Mum Sam Walkley gave birth to her 8lb 5oz second son Harrison in the pool at 10.27am on Thursday, September 1. She was accompanied by her husband, Steve.

Sam aged 25, said the experience was just as pleasant and relaxing as she had hoped it would be.

The pool had been installed three days earlier after a fundraising campaign, including a generous donation from the Hospital’s League of Friends and a contribution of NHS funding from NHS North Somerset.

Sam, from St. George’s, Weston, said: “I had my first son Marlowe here two years ago and I had hoped to have a water birth then, so I was really glad to be able to have one this time.

“We arrived at about 8am and I went straight into the pool. It was very relaxing and very good for pain relief. All in all, it was just as I had hoped my birth plan would go.”

Head of Midwifery/ Matron Kath Roberts said: “We were very pleased that the pool was installed in time for Sam’s delivery. Our first water birth in Weston was a much-anticipated event and the staff in the unit have had a real boost from knowing it has finally happened.

“We would like to thank the PCT, League of Friends and the public for all the donations which enabled us to purchase the pool and we hope to offer this type of birthing experience to local women for many years to come.”
