After a four-day inspection by a team of national experts in all aspects of pathology working for Clinical Pathology Accreditation UK (CPA), a report recognised and praised advances in service quality and commitment to staff development.
The Pathology service in Weston maintains full accreditation with CPA, which is the professional body that monitors the quality of pathology services across the UK.
Also, the Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) inspector looked in detail at all aspects of service quality and safety in the Blood Transfusion Laboratory, which provides blood and other products for transfusion into patients.
The Inspector praised the culture of continuous improvement in the transfusion laboratory and the development of all staff to perform to the highest standards.
Trust Medical Director Nick Gallegos said: “This is an excellent MHRA inspection outcome for Weston. We can now say that Weston is an exemplar of how Blood Transfusion Science can be delivered in an acute hospital environment.
“The Pathology Laboratories at Weston General Hospital are currently at the forefront of the Trust’s drive to find innovative new ways of working to improve all patients’ experience of NHS care.
“Recent detailed comparisons between Pathology Services have reported very favourably on the performance of Weston's Pathology Service and its use of innovative schemes to train the workforce and streamline its working practices.
“The Pathology Team of Healthcare Scientists, Consultant Medical Staff and Support Staff have worked very hard over the past year to bring in new procedures and working methods, which have helped to produce this successful outcome and to ensure that the service delivered to the local population is second to none. “
