Hospital Runner Richard takes on 60-mile Cheddar Challenge

Home

Richard, from Worle, is used to running distances of up to 100 miles at a time. He did that in one day across Dartmoor a couple of years ago.

The Weston to Wells Run will take place on Sunday, September 3 and is to raise money for a bladder scanner for the hospital’s Cheddar Ward, where Richard works, and also for the forces’ charity, Help for Heroes.

Richard said: “I have always loved running since I started 30 years ago when I was a teenager. I did years of club running with Weston Athletics Club and I love running off-road.

“There is no particular knack to running longer distances – you just have to hydrate yourself properly and know your body well.”

2011 is turning into a big year for Richard, who has worked on Cheddar ward for 18 months – he and his wife Karen married in Las Vegas in April – on board a helicopter – and he continued the celebrations on the following day by bungee-jumping 1,000 feet off the third highest building in the world!

lf-a>y u,HWPL people would pay nothing at all under this scheme – and 60 per cent are gone in under an hour, so the majority of visitors will either pay nothing or the lowest fee under our new parking tariff.

“We realise that people may have strong views about paying to park at hospitals, but our view is that while we are pleased to be able to offer abundant parking space to our patients and visitors, it costs us to do so and these costs must not detract from our patient care budgets.

“Because car parking is a benefit only for those patients who choose to use their cars to come to hospital, it is not available to all and therefore must be covered financially by those choosing to drive and park and not by everyone else.

“The Trust is also playing its part as a good Corporate Citizen by encouraging more environmentally-friendly ways of travelling to hospital and we are currently providing additional secure bicycle and motor-cycle parking facilities.

“We have carried this through consistently by introducing car parking charges for our staff on June 1 this year in a bid to encourage them too to be more environmentally-friendly in their travel-to-work options.”

The Trust offers concessionary parking at £1.50 per visit over 30 minutes to the families of critically-ill patients and those with long-term or chronic conditions who must visit the hospital frequently.

Free parking is also offered to our volunteer patient transport drivers and to patients whose sole source of income is State Benefits.
