He is the 10th president since the fundraising support group was founded in 1954 to help the hospital buy equipment which was much-needed, but not always available from limited NHS funds.
Mr Penrose was welcomed by the League of Friends’ Chairman, Mrs June Stephen, who wished him a long and happy association with the group.
Mr Penrose thanked the members for inviting him to become President and said it had only taken him a “nanosecond” to decide to accept.
He said: “I have always felt that the hospital is a vital part of the local community, which Weston is proud of. We are proud also of the role the League of Friends play to help the hospital. I am looking forward to working with you and delighted to be here.”
Earlier in the day Mr Penrose had invited Weston Area Health NHS staff to meet him by appointment at a special constituents’ surgery exclusive to them.
