Top Food Hygiene Rating for Weston General Hospital Kitchens and Restaurant

Home

Weston Area Health NHS Trust, which runs the hospital, has been awarded two certificates confirming the 5-star rating following the visit last week.

The Food Hygiene Rating scheme is designed to help people choose where to eat out or shop for food by giving information about the hygiene standards in restaurants, cafés, takeaways, hotels, supermarkets and other public places where people may eat.

The scheme is run by local authorities in partnership with the Food Standards Agency and the rating shows how closely the organisation is meeting the requirements of food hygiene law.

The Environmental Health (food safety) Officer therefore visited the hospital and checked:

  • how hygienically the food is handled – how it is prepared, cooked, re-heated, cooled and stored

  • the condition of the structure of the buildings – the cleanliness, layout, lighting, ventilation and other facilities

  • how the hospital manages and records what it does to make sure food is safe.

Lorene Read, Chief Executive of Weston Area Health NHS Trust, said:

“We are delighted to have received this excellent vote of confidence in our strict hygiene standards here at the hospital and receiving this highest possible rating has been a great boost to our dedicated catering and housekeeping staff.

“Hospital food is an essential part of patient care. Good food can encourage patients to eat well, giving them the nutrients they need to recover from surgery or illness, and knowing that it is coming from a superbly hygienic kitchen will give our patients further reassurance and encouragement.

”We are also pleased that the independent inspector found the same high standards in our popular and busy Rafters Restaurant, which is a very important part of our service as it offers refreshment and respite for both staff and visitors.”
