Weston Tops Efficiency League in Dr Foster Hospital Guide

Weston Area Health NHS Trust is ranked in the top six most clinically efficient hospitals in the country in the 2012 Dr Foster Hospital Guide published today (Mon Dec 3).

This demonstrates how Weston is successfully striving to deliver the highest level of quality and safe care to our local population.

The Trust, which runs Weston General Hospital, was particularly highlighted for having the smallest percentage in England of patients readmitted to hospital within seven days.

A jewel in Weston's crown was identified by Dr Foster as its hip replacement service, which scored very highly, largely because of the very low number of patients requiring any revision to their surgery later on.

It also performed well in categories relating to: high numbers of procedures performed as day cases and low lengths of stay for patients having elective procedures, such as hip and knee replacements.

Weston Area Health NHS Trust Medical Director Mr Nick Gallegos said: "In an exceptionally tough financial environment for the NHS, the Trust welcomes the Dr Foster analysis of the hospital's performance, which reflects the very hard work put in by staff from all Departments within the Trust.

"Going forward into the next financial year, it is essential that the Trust continues to make the most efficient use of its valuable resources.

"Overall, our length of stay has fallen further and faster than for many of our peers this year, demonstrating the hospital's drive to improve the quality of care for our patients.

"The extremely good outcome for our elective hip replacement service is a tribute to the skill of our orthopaedic team and the dedication of all the staff who support the care of these patients."
