Hospital staff celebrate print room’s 21st birthday

Today (23rd November) marks a special millstone for staff at Weston General Hospital as the Print Room celebrates 21 years of service.

The Print Room, which is staffed entirely by volunteers helping to print, bind and photocopy all the printing needs of the hospital, first began operating in 1994. Over time additional services have been added, such as laminating, leaflet creation and scanning.

Over the last 21 years the hospital, which is run by Weston Area Health NHS Trust, has recruited more than 66 volunteers to help the department operate.

In that time the Print Room has processed more than 189,000 requests – an average of 750 per month or 190 a week, keeping the team on their toes.

The department’s longest serving volunteer Thelma Cording, has spent more than 20 years in the Print Room. She said: “I like to give something to the community and I do get something back as everyone in the Print Room is lovely to work with. I have enjoyed working with them all over the years.

“During my time here it’s been interesting to see the Print Room evolve as equipment and techniques change. It’s remained an absolute pleasure to work here for more than two decades, and I have no doubt I’ll be here for many more years to come.”

Sheridan Flavin, Director of Human Resources said: “The Print Room is absolutely crucial to the smooth running of the hospital and our volunteers do an incredible job making sure the department operates at a high standard.

“We wouldn’t have been able to operate the Print Room without them so to mark 21 years of service is a fantastic achievement and special thanks goes to all of our volunteers.

“We have more than 200 volunteers at the Trust and they are absolute stars who always go the extra mile. It’s wonderful to have such dedicated people who sacrifice their own free time to support with the smooth running of the hospital.”
