The writer of bestselling books including, ‘What Have I Done?’ and ‘A Mother’s Story’, visited the hospital on Monday (19th December) for a book signing for her recent novel ‘Perfect Daughter’ set in the seaside town of Weston-super-Mare.
The bestselling novelist, who lives locally in the West Country, also donated hundreds of copies of ‘Perfect Daughter’ to the hospital with all proceeds going to its Scanner Appeal.
A large number of books were also given away free to staff as an early Christmas present and a token of Amanda’s appreciation for the outstanding work that they carry out on a daily basis.
The Trust that runs Weston General and the League of Friends (a charity that raises funds for the hospital) are working together to raise the £400,000. The money will buy new top of the range digital scanning equipment and refurbish the hospital’s X-Ray department.
The acclaimed writer joins a number of celebrities who have committed support to the Scanner Appeal, including writer, actor, and comedian, John Cleese.
At the book signing in Rafters, the café based inside the hospital, Amanda gave words of encouragement and support to the fundraising drive.
The novelist said: “Weston General Hospital features in my novel ‘Poppy Day’ so I’m delighted to be supporting their Scanner Appeal by donating copies of my book, to help raise funds.
“It’s a great cause – new X-Ray equipment that will make a huge difference to the health of people in our local community. But none of it will be possible if we don’t all show our support.”
She continues: “It’s incredible to see first-hand the amazing work that goes on at Weston General Hospital. Everyone here works so hard to make sure people are fit and well, especially at this time of year.
“I wanted to help give back by donating copies of my new book to Weston’s staff in recognition of their tireless efforts – I hope it makes for a great Christmas present.”
James Rimmer, Chief Executive at Weston Area Health NHS Trust, said: “We are thrilled to have support for our Scanner Appeal from one of the most well-known and prolific writers in the country. It will help to raise even more awareness for this important campaign.
“Amanda fully understands the difference this campaign will make to people’s health and lives in Weston and North Somerset.
“Her backing is truly valued, as is her kind donation of copies of her recent book – the proceeds of which will help us get even closer to our £400,000 appeal target.”
The novel ‘Perfect Daughter’ is available to buy now from the League of Friends shop located inside the hospital. All proceeds will go to the Scanner Appeal.
